Fire Systems Design Intern

Position Summary
The FSD Intern is a temporary position within the ORR Protection Design Department working in our Louisville, KY office. The position includes assisting with creating installation drawings for fire suppression, fire alarm, and special fire detection systems installed by our company. The FSD intern will perform design tasks and drawing production using CAD drafting tools. The FSD Intern needs to have an interest in engineering and building systems.
We are seeking current students who are available to work full time through the summer, and potentially 16-24 hours per week on a year-round basis. Freshmen, Sophomores, Junior or Seniors will be considered.
Applicants must be located in the Louisville, KY area.
Position Responsibilities
  • Assist our designers in completing fire alarm and fire suppression system design drawings.
  • Research building codes, fire codes, and NFPA system standards and apply them to the design.
  • Use AutoCAD software to complete drawings.
  • Occasionally visit customer sites to gather information for the system design.
  • Use fire design software to calculate system sizes and flow rates.
  • Create drawings in AutoCAD from drawing mark-ups prepared by others.
  • Organize files created within our systems.
  • Conduct research for ad-hoc requests as needed.
  • As requested, update long-term data tables of design information, codes in use, and manufacturer data sheet libraries for use within the company.
  • Track your time worked in our timekeeping system.
Preferred Experience and Skills
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university. Engineering, Engineering technology, Safety Science, or similar degree, preferred.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA, preferred.
  • Experience with Google Docs/Google Workspace or other relevant software, preferred,
  • Excellent verbal, written and organizational skills.
  • Ability to independently research and willingness to learn new concepts.
  • Accountability: Demonstrate a high level of accountability by consistently completing tasks and meeting deadlines, and check in daily with your supervisor.
  • Skill in computer-aided drafting is desired; familiarity with AutoCAD and/or Revit is a bonus.
  • Some travel will be required for this position (limited). During the internship there will be an opportunity to visit some ORR project sites.
  • Required to pass drug screen and background check upon offer.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Some college coursework or equivalent experience preferred; Engineering, Engineering technology, Safety Science, or similar degree preferred.
  • Must currently be enrolled in a relevant course of study at a college or university.
  • Hold quality verbal and written communication skills.
  • Hold email, chat, and web-meeting skills that are appropriate for a business setting.
  • Ability: Manage your time effectively.
  • Ability: Check-in daily when working with your supervisor - be accountable.
  • Ability: Research and learn new things on your own.
  • Having Google Docs experience is a plus.
  • Skill: Some computer aided drafting experience. AutoCAD and/or Revit experience is a plus.
