Purpose

This Career Coach position will join the BBA Career Education and Coaching team which is housed within McCombs Career Management & Corporate Relations. The key purpose of this role is to support BBA students through one-on-one career coaching, career programming, and career education. Each Career Coach supports a unique student caseload based on specific BBA majors, industries (e.g., Consulting, Investment Banking, Technology), and/or special populations (e.g., international students).

Responsibilities

Career Coaching

  • Advise and educate a specific caseload of undergraduate students in their career search through individual career coaching and small group advising.
  • Provide information to students on career-related topics such as internship and job opportunities, employer and recruiting trends, utilization of job search tools, interview preparation, offer evaluation, salary negotiation, etc.
  • Conduct mock interviews, perform detailed resume, business writing, and LinkedIn reviews, and help create individual job search strategies.
  • Track student progress and employability, conduct outreach, and collect internship and post-graduation destination information.
  • Serve as liaison to student organizations and faculty relevant to student caseload.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices and trends in career coaching and undergraduate recruiting.

Career Education: Teaching & Resource Development

  • Coordinate and teach a minimum of one section of the BA 101: Career Planning and a Professional Development course for freshman students in the spring and possibly a business career course section for transfer students or honors students in the fall.
  • Contribute to the continual development of career education strategy, content, pedagogy, and mode of delivery to meet evolving students' learning needs and to prepare students for a constantly evolving marketplace.
  • Manage assignments, grading, and classroom administration through Canvas and ensure timely feedback to students.
  • Supervise Teaching Assistant when teaching a career course section.
  • Create relevant digital content for online channels (e.g., websites, social media, etc.) and maintain online resources.

Events & Workshops

  • Plan and coordinate panels, workshops, and other events for students in caseload and for the broader BBA student population.
  • Collaborate with employers and the Employer & Alumni Engagement team to coordinate student events.
  • Evaluate and implement strategies to increase participation in events and programming. Develop and implement new programming as needed.
  • Request programming funds and submit requests through McCombs Intranet System for events, room reservations, purchase orders, contracts, etc., and adhere to UT and McCombs policies and procedures.
  • Help select, train, and manage student peer coaches to assist with programming, events, and logistics. Provide ongoing feedback and mentoring to peer coaches.

Project/Program Management

  • Oversee 1 or more major projects individually or in partnership with other team members. Major projects may include:
    • Coordination of a student program or organization
    • Coordination of programming and resources related to a specific industry (e.g., Consulting, Investment Banking) or student population (e.g., international students)
    • Summer orientation/incoming student programming (e.g., freshmen, transfer)
    • Management of Peer Coaching team and North front desk operations
    • Student newsletter and email communication
    • Social Media management
    • Tracking of employment data and student post-graduation destination outreach
  • Represent Career Management & Corporate Relations at on- and off-campus meetings and conferences.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business, education, counseling or related field. Industry experience is considered a plus.
  • Four years of work experience in career services, higher education, or human resources role tied to corporate recruiting activities; or related work experience.
  • Excellent resume writing, interviewing, and job search skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, effective oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective rapport with students and employers.
  • Ability to teach effectively and present to large groups.
  • Excellent event planning and project management skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Demonstration of a strong passion to work with BBA students.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative team environment.
  • Must be able to travel quarterly, including overnight and some evenings

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with undergraduate business students as a career coach or relevant experience working in a related industry role with coaching / mentoring responsibilities.
  • Experience working in a corporate environment and knowledge of corporate recruiting practices.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate business career paths.
  • Experience teaching a career course at the college level.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum, interactive exercises, and apply effective teaching methods on topics related to careers and recruiting for credit-bearing courses.
  • Experience mentoring and supervising student employees or similar short-term, early career populations.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and/or other remote communication technologies, including leading large group presentations with students, members of the organization, and external guests.
  • Experience coaching and supervising full-time employees.

Salary Range

$60,000

Working Conditions
  • Standard office environment.
  • This is an Austin, TX-based position and is eligible for hybrid work.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the United States. This position is not eligible for sponsorship of work visas.
  • Ability to travel quarterly, including overnight and work some evenings.
